Case When What they said
1000806 Tue Jan 4 19:50:36 2005 child minding
1000810 Wed Jan 5 06:17:56 2005 Too busy
1000815 Tue Mar 22 03:50:49 2005 I'm a new member and as yet I have received very little information about the club, so improving this would be a great place to start. What are the club activities? What is canoe polo? How do my skills & boat rate against the club trips?
1000817 Tue Mar 22 04:41:36 2005 Already play canoe polo. For river trips, hire out equipment and help with lifts to location :)
1000818 Tue Mar 22 06:37:18 2005 More hours in the week
1000819 Tue Mar 22 07:08:00 2005 none that I can think of at present. Perhaps more skill development to bring new paddlers up to intermediate level. I am very happy to run events. We could advertise within the club for people to put on particular events, even evenings/afternoons at Dights.
1000820 Tue Mar 22 07:42:13 2005 Email alerts of upcoming trips directly relating to specific interests (eg overnight trips)
1000821 Tue Mar 22 15:23:04 2005 I think you are a fantastic club, but unfortunately I live in Sydney so my involvement is very limited. I do keep an eye on your wkend/interstate trips. If you do the Snowy River again this year I'll definitely come along.
1000827 Tue Mar 22 18:37:17 2005 Child minding
1000829 Tue Mar 22 19:21:21 2005 My wife and I have all of our own equipment, but we haven't joined because we don't see a schedule of trips and activities to meet our needs. I understand that some trips are organised at short notice when the river levels are suitable, so cannot be planned months in advance. We would like trips on Grade 2/3 rivers, and are more into just running the river than playing. Both of us can roll 50% properly (we can roll upside down, but not roll up again). We are more regularly into MTB, and like the idea of a joint trip. I think we would participate in rolling training.
1000830 Tue Mar 22 19:28:29 2005 I have found the support to be adequate, members friendly and trips well organised.
1000831 Tue Mar 22 20:15:50 2005 As I dont own a boat, the main boats that seem availabe to borrow for river trips are pretty old (big/long, eg dancers). Would be great to have access to a couple of newer boats to help with skills improvement.
1000833 Wed Mar 23 02:50:45 2005 Have a calendar that is published with people down as weekend contacts that you can ring if you have a free weekend.
1000835 Wed Mar 23 05:47:29 2005 The main thing both Alex and I need to do now is become proficient in rolling
1000836 Wed Mar 23 20:55:20 2005 I think you guys are doing a great job as it is. Lots of information available and the organisation seems great.
1000838 Thu Mar 24 19:05:17 2005 I know its hard to organise due to water levels, but my weekends off are rare, i usually need weeks of notice, and find the trips calander often is not accurate.
1000839 Fri Mar 25 22:47:45 2005 Lots of water and babysitting!
1000840 Sat Mar 26 02:00:20 2005 Committee member
1000842 Wed Mar 30 06:53:59 2005 Free child care or activities. Cheaper petrol prices. More annual leave, weekends or public holidays. Closer rivers to Melbourne.
1000845 Thu Apr 7 07:52:43 2005 Relieve me of my position as president
1000846 Fri May 13 23:41:34 2005 the option to invite a friend or two with access to gear.
1000847 Fri May 13 23:52:31 2005 Some club members spend too much time with the same people. Not much interaction, at times.
1000850 Sat May 14 19:06:11 2005 Organize trips
1000851 Sun May 15 06:08:04 2005 N/A
1000852 Sun May 15 19:10:53 2005 Rain making!! Nunawading pool is a long haul from Montmorency for pool nights
1000854 Sun May 15 19:13:35 2005 reduce my workload.
1000859 Sun May 15 22:51:48 2005 A babysitter? (Not serious) The main difficulty for us to come on trips recently has been the lack of time (and the young family).
1000861 Mon May 16 07:45:45 2005 More accurate information about skills and how they match river. for example, I was told the Big River is the next step up from the Yarra. I think this was innaaccurate for someone like me. I think the grade system does not work well, better still would a skill measure of some sort. for example Grade 2 A
1000862 Tue May 17 00:30:32 2005 Kayak hire

5b What sort of activities would help you gain experience, enjoy your paddling and improve your skills?
Case When What they said
1000810 Wed Jan 5 06:17:56 2005 Rain dances
1000815 Tue Mar 22 03:50:49 2005 Most of what you've listed already.
1000817 Tue Mar 22 04:41:36 2005 Rolling nights, river trips for beginner, intermediate-beginner
1000823 Tue Mar 22 17:09:12 2005 Being able to paddle with my teenage kids
1000830 Tue Mar 22 19:28:29 2005 Beside rescue and rolling courses, the only way to improve is by being on the water.
1000831 Tue Mar 22 20:15:50 2005 ?more of polo coordinator to help more with organising teams and getting to know members from others teams (ie to find fill in, give assistance)
1000833 Wed Mar 23 02:50:45 2005 Trips and fun weekends
1000835 Wed Mar 23 05:47:29 2005 Just more practice on the water
1000846 Fri May 13 23:41:34 2005 playboat lessons in pool
1000850 Sat May 14 19:06:11 2005 Rolling, general paddling skills
1000854 Sun May 15 19:13:35 2005 More paddles on 3+ rivers, ie. Mitta, Mitchell, etc
1000857 Sun May 15 20:39:25 2005 As a beginner, regular and successive trips are really important to me. The beginner trips that I’ve been on so far have been great as they’ve been relatively short, focussed but more importantly, they’ve been close together. Beginner trips run here and there or infrequently aren’t as effective as those run on a frequent basis. I guess i'm just looking for time on the water. The rolling nights are a great idea also.
1000861 Mon May 16 07:45:45 2005 I think we are all feeling overloadedby work, and this is getting in the way of paddling. At least I am.I spend weekends too stuffed to do anything much: you need your wits about you for paddling.

5c What level of rivers do you hope to be able to paddle one day?
Case When What they said
1000810 Wed Jan 5 06:17:56 2005 The Yarra
1000815 Tue Mar 22 03:50:49 2005 Mitta, Murray Gates, love to do the Avon descent one day
1000817 Tue Mar 22 04:41:36 2005 Happy paddling any rapids
1000823 Tue Mar 22 17:09:12 2005 I would hope my kids could paddle the Mitchell or similar.
1000830 Tue Mar 22 19:28:29 2005 4, maybe 5?
1000831 Tue Mar 22 20:15:50 2005 not sure
1000833 Wed Mar 23 02:50:45 2005 Easy ones
1000835 Wed Mar 23 05:47:29 2005 Both I and Alex would like to be comfortable tackling longer trips on easy to medium rivers
1000843 Wed Mar 30 23:36:39 2005 grade 2-3
1000846 Fri May 13 23:41:34 2005 just about anything that is doable. Probably a bit far fetched but i want to try stuff that will scare that life out of me and teach me to do tricks
1000850 Sat May 14 19:06:11 2005 Intermediate / Advanced
1000854 Sun May 15 19:13:35 2005 level 4+, still have this crazy desire to paddle the Franklin.
1000857 Sun May 15 20:39:25 2005 Really fun ones! As a beginner I haven't decided which are the most fun, but if they're out there, I'd like to paddle them 'one day'.
1000861 Mon May 16 07:45:45 2005 Great question: level three is just fine

6 Thank your for completing this survey. If you have any other comments you wish to make please include them here.
Case When What they said
1000806 Tue Jan 4 19:50:36 2005 nice survey
1000810 Wed Jan 5 06:17:56 2005 Nup
1000811 Mon Feb 28 06:48:08 2005 That was fun.
1000815 Tue Mar 22 03:50:49 2005 Nah, not really, but this is a good initiative. All I would say is to make the club more accessible to new members, joining a new club can be daunting until you know where you stand. But thanks. Tim
1000818 Tue Mar 22 06:37:18 2005 WHCC already meets my needs and I will try to attend more trips. Also, congratulations on running the Bohica teams. They are well organised and an important part of the polo competition. Ian
1000820 Tue Mar 22 07:42:13 2005 Web site is very good resource
1000823 Tue Mar 22 17:09:12 2005 The main reason I don't participate in club activities is competing pressures on my time to do more family-oriented activities. I haven't received a newsletter only membership renewal for the current year, nor have I received a newsletter for the past 18 months or so.
1000827 Tue Mar 22 18:37:17 2005 Are committee members eligible for the $30 voucher ?
1000829 Tue Mar 22 19:21:21 2005 I'm not a beginner but would like to learn to roll properly.
1000830 Tue Mar 22 19:28:29 2005 I am a bit over committed time wise at the momment, but would consider joining the committee, or helping out with stuff at a later date
1000832 Tue Mar 22 20:50:36 2005 Have only recently started paddeling, enjoy white water. Completed the basics course recently Haven't had the oppurtunity to purchase a boat and also had other sporting commitments. Not quite sure what to buy as yet and where from. Plan to do more over winter Need to save too
1000833 Wed Mar 23 02:50:45 2005 In the first question about why I haven't rejoined - also because I tried on the Web site a few times, but always seemed to strike some problem. I used to be a newsletter member, once the VCA insurance came in, sothat I could keep up with what was going on, but can I still do this now?(The question only let me put one answer) Well constructed survey by the way!!!!
1000839 Fri Mar 25 22:47:45 2005 The only reason I didn't join this year was coz there was an email last July? saying that the Canoeing Aust form that has to be signed would be sent out to all current members and it didn't arrive so I completely forgot for 6 months by which time it didn't seem worth paying the full CA membership (as I no longer play polo) for only 6 months. Nothing personal!
1000842 Wed Mar 30 06:53:59 2005 Hi, hope the survey brings useful info.
1000845 Thu Apr 7 07:52:43 2005 I hope I am not the only one to complete the survey.
1000847 Fri May 13 23:52:31 2005 People teaching rolling should go through some type of course/program to ensure they are using safe techniques. Same goes for other skills.
1000850 Sat May 14 19:06:11 2005 Would recommend this club to anyone interested in whitewater. Seems to have many committed club members.
1000851 Sun May 15 06:08:04 2005 A well presented survey
1000852 Sun May 15 19:10:53 2005 Even though I am not a beginner, I suggest that in- pool rolling practice, and lots of it, is important preparation during the dry months.
1000857 Sun May 15 20:39:25 2005 I've been really impressed with the professionalism and the general goings on of the club. As with all organisations that are run by volunteers, it can sometimes be a mixed bag, but from what I've seen so far from whcc, it's an incredibly well run and structured group with friendly people who are happy to help introduce new people to the sport. Well done.
1000861 Mon May 16 07:45:45 2005 Sorry Ido not get to do much paddling, but everyday stuff always seems to get in the way, especially with a family. Yes I know, excuses excuses! Survey is excellent and beautifully executed. Well done.
